The remains of a Goodridge man who was missing in action since the Korean War have been positively identified. Cpl. James Norman Sund was captured as a prisoner of war while fighting the enemy in South Korea on Feb. 12, 1951. He was killed approximately two months later on April 4, 1951.

Sund enlisted in the United States Army and served as a member of Company K, 3rd Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Prisoner of War Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal

Corporal James Norman Sund, 28, died while Prisoner of War on April 24, 1951 in Korea.

James Norman Sund was born on March 14, 1923 the son of Evan J. and Marie Christine (Seegert) Sund. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith and attended school at Highlanding, MN. James helped his family with farming.

James enlisted in the United States Army. Corporal James Norman Sund was a member of Company K, 3rd Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was taken Prisoner of War while fighting the enemy in South Korea on February 12, 1951 and was killed while a prisoner on April 4, 1951. His remains were not recovered until recently. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial. Corporal Sund was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Prisoner of War Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Survivors include three sisters, Mabel Hayes of Akron, OH, Sophie Rambeck of Thief River Falls, MN and Mathilda Sund of Grand Forks, ND; two brothers, Martin Sund of Thief River Falls, MN and Orvin Sund of Thief River Falls, MN; and several other relatives.

He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Gladys Olson; brother, Evan Sund; baby brother, Barent Sund; and brother, Floyd Sund.

Corporal James Norman Sund will arrive at Hector International Airport in Fargo, ND at 8:47 PM Friday, July 22, 2011on Delta Airlines flight 865. Military honors will be provided by members of the Minnesota Army National Guard Honor Guard.

The funeral procession will form at Johnson Funeral Service, 420 LaBree Ave. N., Thief River Falls, MN at 8:30 AM on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 to take Corporal Sund past his home farm near Highlanding, MN to Faith Lutheran Church, 201 Vaughan St. E., Goodridge, MN where visitation will be held from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM.

The funeral service for Corporal James Norman Sund will begin at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at Faith Lutheran Church, 201 Vaughan St. E., Goodridge, MN with Rev. Robert Dahlen officiating. Burial will follow at the Highlanding Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by members of the Minnesota Army National Guard Honor Guard.
