Astronomer. Rowbotham was the founder of the Flat Earth Society. He believed that the Earth was flat and not round. He travelled extensively starting in 1849 for over 35 years publishing and lecturing about his beliefs. In 1849 he wrote his work, "Zetetic Astronomy: A Description Of Several Experiments Which Prove That The Surface Of The Sea Is A Perfect Plane And That The Earth Is Not A Globe!" He became instrumental with the founding in England and New York of the Universal Zetetic Society in 1873.

The inscription reads : 'Samuel Rowbotham, M.D., Ph.D., Founder of Zetetical Philosophy, died suddenly Decr. 23rd. 1884. (An eight-line poem follows : most of it has faded, but the last line is "Upon the scroll of fame.") And his wife, Caroline Elizabeth Rowbotham, died 28th. June 1919, aged 73.' (There is anothe rpoem under her name, but not one word of it is readable.)

The left-hand side of the monument bears the following inscription : 'Also his youngest son, Arthur Albert Rowbotham, 29th. October 1886, in the 7th. year of his age. Ethel Louise Rowbotham. daughter, died 11th. May 1886, aged 14.' A five-line poem follows : sadly, it is illegible.

The inscription on the right-hand side of the monument reads : 'Ada Blanche Turner, his last surviving child, wife of E.R.A. Turner and mother of Ruth, died 7th. January 1952, aged 73. "The fool wonders, the wise man asks." - Disraeli.'
