Carlsbad-Lillie (Craig) Black died December 10, 2010, at Tri-City Hospital at the age of 99. She was born at her grandmother's home in Oklahoma on July 28, 1911. Within a few days of birth, they returned to their home in Wayne, Oklahoma, where she was raised and lived until 1941.

As a child, she met her future husband, Leo John Black. They both gravitated to Carlsbad, Leo in about 1938 and Lillie in 1941. While they were both here, they decided to get married and set up household in Carlsbad. They were married on August 22, 1941, in the home of Reverend Inwood, a Methodist minister. Leo died of a heart attack in 1976.

Lillie was the oldest of four children born to Sarah (Hawkins) and Arthur Craig. She was preceded in her death by her parents, her two brothers (Ray and Carter Craig) and her sister (Hazel [Craig] Helton).

Lillie is survived by her son, Leo John Black, Jr., and his wife Martha; her daughter, Lura Louise Black; three grandchildren, Heidi Olivera (Louis), Craig Black (Maria), and Heather Polinsky (Barry); five great-grandchildren, Lily Olivera, Sofia Black, Axel Black, Alexander Polinsky, and Griffin Polinsky; and many nieces and nephews.

Lillie attended East Central College, Ada, Oklahoma from 1929 through 1933. She graduated with a degree in education, intending to teach high school math. The superintendent of the Wayne school system approached her to fill a vacancy for a second grade teacher. She agreed to help them out temporarily. To her surprise, she fell in love with second graders and continued teaching that age group until she retired in 1976.

When she married Leo in 1941, they set out to have a family, so when Lillie moved permanently to California, she took a break from teaching. She believed in raising her children, getting them through kindergarten before returning to work. As Leo Jr. approached the completion of kindergarten, Lura came along, and the "raising" started all over again. When Lura approached the start of kindergarten, Dr. Walter Glines came begging. He really wanted Lillie for a second grade teacher. He mailed her a contract, hoping he could persuade her. The offered salary was more than she had ever received. She and Leo Sr. discussed it and decided it was workable. So, in 1952, Lillie again began teaching second grade.

Over the years, she has been active in many organizations. She served as president of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 8359. She was a member of the Greater San Diego Mathematics Council. She was active in the Ladies Union and was a boys' Sunday School teacher at Carlsbad Union (now Community) Church. She was actively involved in PTA; Retired Teacher's Association; Crafty Crafters at the Carlsbad Senior Center; and Senior Mariners, Ambassadors (where she acted as treasurer for many years), Chapter 3, and WINGS at Carlsbad Community Church. She taught at the first four elementary schools in Carlsbad---Pine, Jefferson, Magnolia, and Buena Vista. As a new school was built, she was selected to be one of the teachers. She was a member of AARP. In 1971, she was a recipient of the San Diego County Teachers' Association WHO Award given to certify that she had served to advance the welfare of the master profession, teaching through dedicated and outstanding performance and leadership in California Teachers Association chapter activities.

Her favorite pastimes were knitting, traveling, visiting with friends and family, having lunch at the Carlsbad Senior Center, reading her Bible, praying for her loved ones and attending her church.
