Andrés Abelino "Abel" Masón (also: Mazón) y Mandarraga was the son of Luís Masón (also: Mazón) y [?] and Guadalupe Mandarraga y [?]. Abel arrived in California about 1860. During the Civil war he enlisted at Los Angeles as a private for 3 years on January 30, 1864, and was mustered into Company D, 1st Battalion, Native California Cavalry, at Drum Barracks (Wilmington) on March 3, 1864. He was promoted to sergeant while at Drum Barracks. Sergeant Masón was posted to Fort Mason, Arizona Territory, where he survived the deadly malaria epidemic during the Winter of 1865-66. He returned to California, where he was mustered out at Drum Barracks with his company March 20, 1866 (Orton, "Mazon", p. 818). Abel married (1) María Bérsabe Domínguez y Ávila at the Los Angeles Plaza Church on February 17, 1867. Abel and Bérsabe were the padrinos (Godparents) for Honoria Rosa Campo, daughter of Camilo Campo, who had served with Abel in Company D. Years later Bérsabe divorced Abel on March 21, 1884. Then, on April 3, 1884, Abel married (2) María Florentina Rubio, who had divorced Melvin Samuel Fay earlier that same day--and then Melvin married (2) María Bérsabe Domínguez! Abel and Melvin (Company I, 4th California Infantry) had both served together at Drum Barracks and after the war had remained close friends. Abel filed for a Civil War veteran's pension at Santa Monica on January 14, 1892, and received application No. 1,085,025 (no certificate number). He had been a Santa Mónica resident for more than 20 years when he died. Abel was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery March 30, 1901.
