Wellington Vannatta
Died Jan. 22, 1914, at his home in Glendale, California, Wellington Vannatta, Esq. aged 67 years, 1 month, 6 days.
Mr. Vannatta was well known in this vicinity, having resided here the larger part of his life. He was born Dec. 16, 1846, at Attica, Ohio. He attended the law school at Cincinnati and graduated about 1868, and commenced practice the same year at Prescott, Wisconsin removing to River Falls some years later, where he formed a co-partnership with Charles Smith, Esq. and later with Frank Gilson, Esq. and with Nils I. Haugen, Esq.
Soon after removing to River Falls he also entered into co-partnership with John E. Glover, Esq. then of Hudson.
In all of these business relations he was eminently successful and with each of his business associates he formed lasting friendships. He finally retired from active practice of law in 1893 but continued to reside at River Falls for several years.
Of Mr. Vannatta it may be said that he possessed three marked characteristics. He was an excellent attorney, a successful business man and a good farmer. And he was a faithful friend.
As an attorney he was careful, conservative and conscientious and ever attentive to the interests of his clients. In his practice he was courteous to his opponents, but decided in his acts, never allowing his sense of courtesy to over-ride his duty to his clients. By nature he was reticent, and never inclined to betray his feelings to others. His legal instincts were remarkably correct and hence he was an excellent counselor, and as such he won many clients who became his fast friends.
As a farmer he carried on several farms, rather delighting in his class of investment, and in his work he was successful, both for himself and for his tenants. His farms were always kept in good condition, and hence he desired to retire from active work, then found ready purchasers at remunerative prices.
In business matters his success was won by an understanding and careful consideration of cause and result than by active work. In Many instances he had partners who early learned to appreciate his careful judgement and to trust his conclusions. All of those so associated with him in business became his warm friends.
He closed his law business in 1893 and from that time gradually with drew from active business life. He was particularly fond of travel, and visited Europe more than once, and made several trips to the western coast of the United States, finally determining to locate there and a a few years since purchased a home there where he died.
On Oct. 14, 1912, he married Miss Carlotta Blaurock, who survives him. Mr. Vannatta came of a rather large family, of whom there still survive Wellesley Vannatta, Esq., of this city his brother, and two sister, Mrs. W. Cograve and Mrs. A. J. Goodwin.
The remains were brought to River falls for interment, the funeral service being held at 10:30 o'clock this morning at the home of his brother. Rev. D. B. Spencer officiated.
