Miss Elizabeth Ellis was born September 12, 1823 at Millerburg, Pennsylvania. At the age of 28 she was married to Benjamin Erastus Vannatta in Attica Ohio where he was then practicing medicine. In 1855 impaired health compelled Mr. Vannatta to abandon the practice of his profession and they came west, settling in this vicinity. They resided in Prescott for two years and also spent a few years on their farm in the town of Troy, afterwards removing to this city, where Mr. Vannatta died of paralysis of the heart, April 21, 1890.
Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Vannatta - two daughters, Evelyn and Nellie, and a son, Wellesley. The former, Mrs. Evelyn Cograve of Minneapolis the latter, Wellesley Vannatta of this city survive. The other daughter Mrs. Nellie Adams, died about three years ago.
During her long residence in this locality, Mrs. Vannatta made hosts of friends and with her pleasant greeting for all, a frank sympathetic kindness for intimate friends and a characteristic, unselfish thoughtfulness for others' needs, she endeared herself to many who deeply mourn her loss.
Funeral services were held this morning at the residence, conducted by Rev. D. B. Spencer, the surviving children and grand children being in attendance. The local Order of Eastern Star escorted the remains to their last resting place in Greenwood cemetery and performed the burial service.
