She was born in Claysburg, daughter of the late Chester Wood and Clara Belle (Souser) Kimmel. She married Clifford Sherman Benton on Aug. 10, 1946, and he preceded her in death on Sept. 28, 2002.
She was the dear mother of a daughter, Phyllis Kinser, and husband, Michael, of Altoona; and a son, Dennis, and wife, Jane, of Claysburg. Also surviving are five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers: Ross W. Kimmel and Cloyd C. Kimmel; and two sisters: Mary Jane (Kimmel) Laird and Dorothy M. (Kimmel) Hoover. She was the last surviving member of her family.
Winnie was a member of Claysburg United Methodist Church. She was employed at the Clover Farm Store and then later at the Claysburg-Kimmel School for 37 years, where she retired as manager and cook in the cafeteria. She enjoyed being with her family, relatives and friends, the holidays, working in her yard, cooking, baking and watching the old television shows.
Winnie was greatly loved and will be deeply missed.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at Leslie-Miller Funeral Home, Claysburg, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 28, 2011, the Rev. Gary Blankley officiating. Interment will be at Claysburg Union Cemetery.
