Santa Barbara News-Press Monday Evening, April 27, 1964 Ross McLeod Maj. Ross McLeod, USAR (ret.), a former practicing lawyer in Santa Barbara with extensive Army legal experience, here and abroad, died suddenly at 1:15 a.m. today. He was taken ill at his home in San Marcos Trout Club and was dead on arrival at the hospital. His wife was out of town for a trip. A native of San Francisco, he was born in 1900 and graduated from UC Berkeley in 1923. He went to work for the Bank of Italy (later Bank of America) in the legal department. In 1929 he entered the practice of law here and became the partner of the late State Sen. Clarence Ward. In 1940 Army reservist McLeod was called to active duty and served in the Judge Advocate's Section. He was defending counsel for Col. James A. Killian, the defendant in a famous case in which Killian was accused of brutality to American troops at Litchfield, near Birmingham. McLeod was able to show that while there may have been some atrocities, they were without the knowledge of Killian. He attended the war crimes trials at Nuernberg and tried a number of minor offenders. Later he sat on a review board, which reviewed capital cases for legality. From 1945 to 1947 he was in American military government in Germany. After teaching military law at the Army Adjutant General's School, he was retired for reasons of health. Returning to Santa Barbara, he returned to UCSB for some special studies. Mr. and Mrs. McLeod lived at San Marcos Trout Club, where he enlarged their home. Funeral services will be announced by the Welch-Ryce Associates. Alderson John W Funrl Dir Welch-Ryce-Haider Funeral Chapels 15 E Sola St Santa Barbara, CA 93101-2505 Phone: (805) 965-5145
