Hazel Murray Barker, 96, passed away peacefully Saturday at her home on Mann Drive after a lingering illness. Born to William Dennis and Martha Orr Jones Murray on Jan. 27, 1899, Mrs. Barker spent most of her life in Grant County. She attended schools in Silver City and received additional education at Ramona School in California. During her early youth, she participated in the Silver City Strollers, a general theatric group of entertainers organized during World War I. Her entire life was devoted to being a mother and homemaker. She is survived by a daughter, Mary Louise Kyzer of Silver City; three sons, Edwin Barker and his wife, Marilyn of Houston, William Barker and his wife, Patsy of Roswell, Ga. and Jack Barker and his wife, Marie of El Paso, Texas; a sister, Lyda Murray Ryan; 13 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Barker; a brother, Harry Booth Murray; and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.D. Murray. The funeral liturgy will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with the Rev. Rod Nichols celebrating. The rite of committal will follow in Memory Lane Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Robert Ball, Lucadio Madrid, Robert Harsh, Bobby Mendoza, Jack Hill and Bert Irwin. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name may be made to the Silver City Museum, 312 W. Broadway, Silver City,NM 88061. Family members selected Curtis-Bright Funeral Home to serve them.
