He was born Oct. 31, 1865, in England. Eight years later he left his native land and moved to Canada where he received his early education. When a young man he entered the wagon and carriage business to which he remained for some time before moving to Nebraska in 1885. He established his residence in Fillmore county, where he again took up the wagon and carriage business. Later he lived in Jefferson county and in 1899 moved to Norfolk where he bought the laundry plant and operated it until about a year ago when it was acquired by the Dudley Laundry company. He started in the laundry business in a small way and as Norfolk and northeast Nebraska developed his establishment grew in size. In recent years he operated a truck service throughout northeast Nebraska and at one time had forty to fifty persons in his employ.
He was married to Miss Carrie Barber on Jan. 9, 1895 in Fillmore They are the parents of seven children, four sons and three daughters. They are Marion, Los Angeles; Ira, Charlotte and Caroline, Chicago; Robert, Victor and Helen, Norfolk.
In 1920 he built the Grand theater, which for many years was Norfolk's leading motion picture theater.
