Oscar Bartlett Died After Long Illness
Oscar Bartlett, a resident of Chouteau county and Fort Benton for the past 44 years, passed away at the Deaconess hospital in Great Falls on Friday, March 2, at 6 p.m., following an illness that extended over twelve years or more. For the past number of years he had been almost an invalid following a heart attack and complications.
Oscar Bartlett was born July 25, 1878, at La Center, Wash. where he spent his early life. He was united in marriage to Mary Estella Gurnsey on Oct. 2, 1898, at Southwich, Idaho. Following their marriage they went to Rossland, British Columbia, where they spent two years, and from there went to California to spend a year and returned to Canada where they resided for 12 years at Grand Forks, British Columbia. In 1912 the Bartletts came to Montana and took up land in the Goosebill section. During the first years of their homestead life there were many ups and downs to the farming life but they remained to make a success of their undertaking, and built up a good country ranch property. In 1942 due to ill health they leased their farm property and purchased a residence in Fort Benton where they have since resided.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Bartlett were taken to Great Falls several weeks ago after she had collapsed at her home here. Mrs. Bartlett still remains in a serious condition there.
Mr. Bartlett is survived by his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Gladys Olson,; three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, of this city; one brother, Milton Bartlett, of Concord, Calif.; two half brothers, "Bill" of Albion, Wash., and E. J. (Bud) Bartlett, of Sherwood, Ore.; one sister, Cora Morris of Vancouver, B. C.; and other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be held from the Benton Funeral Home chapel on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock and burial will be in Riverside cemetery.
