Edward M. Carter Dies
Edward M. Carter, 86, died Sunday April 21, at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Lee in Grand Island. He suffered a stroke Friday.
The son of James and Mary Carter, he was born Dec. 1, 1859, in Indiana. On Mar. 20, 1881, he married Hanna L. Detamore in Illinois and came to Nebraska in 1886, settling in Hamilton county.
Mrs. Carter died July 23, 1923, and the following year he moved from Giltner to Grand Island. On May 4, 1924, he married Maggie Lanterman.
Despite his age, he was one of several older men who took jobs to help out to relieve the labor shortage in the latter years of the recent war. He worked for five months in 1944 as a Western Union messenger and as late as last fall worked as a bellhop and elevator operator at the Hotel Stratton.
Mr. Carter is survived by his wife; four sons, Phillip H., Giltner; Schuyler N., Vernalis, Calif., Edward J., Pocatello Ida., and Wesley W., Boise, Ida.; two daughters, Mrs. W. D. Lee, Grand Island, and Mrs. J. H. Banister, Juniata; 32 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. One son, Howard, died in Omaha on Sept. 25, 1924.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p. m. at the Geddes funeral home and burial was in the Giltner cemetery. Dr. L. F. Sweetland, pastor of the First Presbyteriaterian church conducted the services.
