Levi Putnam, Pioneer, succumbs to stroke
Funeral services for Levi Putnam, 80, whose sudden and unexpected death occured soon after midnight Saturday, were held on Tuesday afternoon at the Free Methodist church. Rev. Merrigan officiating. Pall Bearers were: C.F. Crook, Harve Wright, Ralph Everhart, Lincoln Gates, Wm. Ault, and Wm. Nagle. Burial was made in Greenwood Cemetery.
A son of Lewis and Alvina (Best) Putnam, Levi was born March 14, 1859 in New York state. Coming to this state he lived for a time in Olmstead county, coming to Hubbard in 1887.
Several years he worked for Dan Petrie at his saw mill at Hubbard. Later with Petrie he operated a threshing rig and worked on railroads. In the fall of each year he worked in teh harvest fields of the Dakota's. He took up a homestead in Rockwood township and after proving upon the land, sold the place. For the past ten years he has lived in Park Rapids.
He was a quiet and unassuming man known among old timers as "Levi" He complained of pain in teh chest Friday evening but did not suspect a serious condition and retired about 10:30 o'clock. He was found dead in bed the following day by Godfrey Nelson who called at the home to see him.
A brother, William of Rochester and also three sisers, two of whom reside in Minneapolis and one in the west survive.
