George B. Mounce, 94, an employee of the city of Valparaiso for over 30 years, died Thursday at 9:30 a.m., in the Methodist hospital in Gary. He had been a patient for the past three weeks.
Born in Crawfordsville, Dec. 24, 1861, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Smith Mounce. He married Dora Sherrick of Logan, O., in 1882. They were the parents of 10 children. His wife preceded him in death on May 12, 1929. The family came to Valparaiso 65 years ago.
Mounce worked with the city street department until October of 1955 in spite of his advanced years. Before this illness he had been active and apparently in good health. He made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Ben Wilburn, at 102 Washington street, in this city.
Surviving are eight children: Clifton and Harley Mounce of Kingsbury, Edward of Gary, William of Valparaiso, Mrs. Frank Thompson of Kingsbury, Mrs. Fred Hughes of Gary, Mrs. Rose Spencer and Mrs. Ben Wilburn, both of Valparaiso. Two daughters preceded him in death. There are also 26 grandchildren, 62 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Sunday from LePell's Funeral home at 1:30 p.m., with the Rev. L. E. Myers of the Church of the Nazarene officiating. Burial will be made in Graceland cemetery.
Friends may call at LePell's from Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock until time of services.
