HANNIBAL - George Clayton Abright Sr., 81, of Hannibal, died at 4:45 p.m. Monday, May 28, 2001, at Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Palmyra.
Graveside funeral services, with military rites by Emmette J. Shields American Legion Post No. 55, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 31, at Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal. The Rev. Steve Lake will officiate.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Grand View Funeral Home in Hannibal.
Mr. Abright was born Oct. 7, 1919, in Hannibal to William Worden and Katherine Clayton Gentry Abright.
He was married to Jeanne Hayden on July 14, 1946. He was then married to Helen Riefesel on Sept. 1, 1976. She survives.
Other survivors include one son, George Clayton Abright Jr. of Hannibal; two stepsons, J. Mike Riefesel of Bethlehem, Ga., and Joe Riefesel of Hannibal; two daughters, Katherine A. Griffen of Bettendorf, Iowa and Jeanne Abright of Cape Canaveral, Fla.; one stepdaughter, Andrea Dowell of Liberty; two brothers, James Worden Abright and Robert Henry Abright, both of Hannibal; one sister, Mary Katherine Mueller of Chester, Ill.; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Fern Dearing Abright; one brother, Charles William Abright; and one sister, Alice Damon.
Mr. Abright was a longtime dairyman and farmer. He was a 1937 graduate of Hannibal High School. He was a student at the University of Missouri and a member of Alpha Gamma Sigma when he was drafted into World War II. He was on the board of the Mid American Dairymen Inc. of St. Louis for 22 years. He was a member of the New London and Hannibal Lions Clubs.
Mr. Abright was an elder at the Mount Zion Christian Church. He was a member of the Emmette J. Shields American Legion Post No. 55 of Hannibal. During World War II he was a first lieutenant in the 9th Armored Division as a pilot and observer in the European Theater. He received the Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters for his participation in the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944.
