obituary: Belleville Telescope 7-29-1937
Columbus Hansford Owens was born in Somerset, Ky, October 1, 1875, and passed away at his home in Chester, July 19, 1937, at the age of 61 years, 9 months and 18 days.
He was one of a family of 12 children. He left his home in Kentucky when 17 years old and settled in Illinois where he met and married Miss Elizabeth Durham in March, 1904. To this union was born one daughter, who survives her father.
In February 1905 they moved to a farm near Republic and on June 27, 1908 he had the misfortune to lose his companion, which left a vacant place in his home.
On August 1, 1912, he was untied in marriage to Mrs Addie Stafford of Republic, and lived in that community until 1921, when the family moved to a farm south of Hebron, where they resided until poor health forced him to sell his farm goods and equipment in 1937. After that they made their home in Chester.
Early in life he confessed his faith in Christ, and was identified with the United Brethren church of Republic.
Those left to mourn his death are his beloved wife; one daughter, Mrs Anna Milner of Republic, one step-daughter, Mrs Mildred Brumbaugh of Republic; six grandchildren, and a host of friends.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday by the Rev J J Ruppert of Guide Rock in the Washington Chapel, south of Byron. Interment was in the Washington Cemetery.
