Daniel Hovey,the ancestor of the American Hoveys,was born in England,being the son of Richard Hovey,a Glover(one who makes gloves),of that place. His christening was Aug. 9,1618 in Waltham Abbey,Holy Cross Church,county of Essex,England. He was apparently a man of education and the fact that the curate of his parish church was friendly to and interested in him while he was in his teens and far away in a strange land indicates that there were elements in his character which drew and held attention to him. Daniel was one of the early settlers of Ipswich,Massachusetts,arriving in 1635 at the age of seventeen. The town of Ipswich granted Daniel six acres of land on Muddy Creek;a house lot,one acres of ground on the south side of the town river;also six acres of planting ground on Sagamore Hill. He became somewhat prominent and held several town officies in Ipswich;being chosen one of the selectman,a surveyor of highways and a constable. In the Ipswich Antiquarian papers is a drawing of his house supposed to have been built in 1668,with this statement: The very ancient dwelling and wharf at the northerly end of Turkey Shore,where built and owned by Daniel Hovey,the ancester of the Ipswich Hovey. In May 1660,a colony went from Ipswich to Quaboag,a place subsequently named Brookfield;and Daniel Hovey along with sons James and Thomas joined in 1668. Daniel was living in Quaboag in May 1672,but had moved to Hadley before the massacre at Quaboag in 1675 that killed his son James. While living in Hadley,he suffered much at the hands of the Indians and was a sharer in providing defense for the town.
