In loving memory of my 3rd Great Grandmother, Marilla Orton Ferris
Age: 90 years & 5 months old
I do not know the exact origin/birth place of Marilla Orton. In the 1850, 1870 and 1880 US Census's, it states that she was born in New York. On her Death Certificate it states that her place of birth was Vermont. Other individuals have stated to me that she was born in Vermont or Connecticut, but no one can produce any documentation to back up their claims. If someone has some proof as to her place of birth, I would be happy to add it to this page.
It is just a guess, but Marilla may have married Abijah Ruggles Ferris about 1823. Their daughter Margaretta was born May 1825. They appear to have lived in New York City. By the 1850 US Census, Marilla was enumerated as a Widow. In the 1857 NYC Directory, she lived at 181 1/2 Orchard St. NY, NY, and her occupation was listed as "Nurse". In her latter years, she was enumerated as living with her daughter Margaret and her family.
On Friday, September 5, 1890, Marilla died suddenly from senility and asthemia(lack of strength, diminution of vital powers; debility), while at her son Alpheus's house in Brooklyn, NY.
Marilla was interred at the Cemetery of the Evergreens, in Brooklyn, New York on September 7, 1890. Here she has rested for over 125 years, under a very unique diamond shaped tombstone. She is surrounded by two Grandsons ~ Harry L. Ferris and Alpheus S. Ferris Jr., a Granddaughter ~ Goldie E. Hillmann, a Great-Grandson ~ Ferris Orton Hillmann Sr, & a Great-Granddaughter ~ Marion G. Veltman.
