Emma was one of seven children of James and Lucy (Savage) Anderson. She was born and raised on her father's donation land claim farm near Jefferson in Marion County. In 1894 she married George Tharp, and they raised two children (Mabel and Floyd) on their farm in Marion County. George died in 1936, and Emma moved to Salem.
