Chauncey was a Corporal with Co. E, 171st Pa Infantry, Dec 1862 to April 1863; and a Private, promoted to Corporal with Co A, 88th PA Infantry, March 1865 to June 1865. The records make no mention of him being a Sgt. He joined the 88th in the field on April 3 after the battle at Hatcher's Run near Petersburg, Va, and was there when Grant used the 88th to
join a series of battles along the Appomattox River, trapping Lee's army and forcing his surrender on April 9th. Chauncey participated in the Grand Review of the Army of the Potomac in Washington DC on May 23. It took over six hours for the army's 80,000 men to pass the crowds. Combined with the review of Sherman's army the next day, it was considered one of the grandest spectacles in the 19th century.
