Willis Nunley, Veteran of Mexican War and Civil War. A left behind child of Chikamaka Indians during the 1838 forced removal of all Cherokee. He was "adopted" by William B. Nunley, himself part Cherokee. His adoptive mother was Sarah Jane Smartt.

Willis served in the Mexican War from 1846 to 1848 with the Blue Mountian Boys Regiment. He was a medical aide.

He served as a private in the Tennessee Cavalry, First Regiment (Vidette, Company "E" for one year. He participated in skirmish at Hunt's Mill near Larkinsville, AL September 28 1863, skirmishes at Beersheba Springs November 26, expedition to Lebanon December 12-13, skirmished at Sand Mountain AL Dec 26 and mustered out June 16, 1864.

Willis, along with his first wife, Elizabeth, also a full-blood Aniwaya Cherokee had 3 children, William B., Sarah and Mary. Elizabeth passed away in 1855 and Willis remarried to Nancy Brown in 1859. They had 11 children between them.
