Benjamin was one of 5 children of Walter Ring and Margaret Keesey Ring. His siblings were George, Jacob, Lewis and Julia. He married Evaline Williamson of Tyler County, Va on Aug 29, 1850, in Middleburn, Va by the Reverend John A. Smith. He and Evaline had 7 children: 1) George, 1854; 2) David, 1855; 3) Nancy, 1858; 4) Mariah, 1862; 5) Friend, 1873; 6) Samuel, 1875 and 7) Anna, 1882. All were born in Jolly, Monroe County, Ohio. During the great Civil War, Benjamin and his two brothers, Jacob and Lewis all joined together in the 116th Ohio Volunteer Regiment Infantry, Co A. After some time had passed the boys were just outside Winchester, Va when typhoid fever hit their encampment and brother Lewis got it and died that very same day on June 11, 1863. Five days later both Benjamin and Jacob came down with the fever. While they were laid up in the hospital and with a battle being fought not that far away from their encampment and hospital, it was soon overrun by the confederates and they were taken prisoner. They were transported by rail to Richmond and imprisoned there. Benjamin was a prisoner for 10 days at Libby Prison in Richond until he was released because of inadequate medical treatment and lack of available medicines. Brother Jacob was a prisoner at Shenandoah for 18 days and he was released for the same reasons as his brother. Benjamin was the worse of the two and was laid up for 3 months while Jacob returned to the 116th until Nov when they both were together again. Shortly thereafter, Benjamin was made a scout until the end of the war. The 116th was near Appomattox Court House, VA when Gen Lee surrendered to Gen Grant in April 1865. They both were mustered out of the army on Jun 14th 1865, in Richmond and quickly returned to their homes in Ohio.
