John Thompson was born in West Deer Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, March 23, 1811, and died at his home near Vandalia, July 17, 1897. He belonged to the United Presbyterian church as a young man but after marriage to Margaret Logan, Feb. 5, 1835, he joined the Baptist church at Freeport Pennsylvania. He was deacon in the Sandusky Street Baptist church several years. He came to Iowa in the spring of 1856, locating at Vandalia. He was the father of nine children, 5 of whom are living. His wife also survives. The funeral was held at the Baptist church, at Vandalia. He had filled the office of Deacon in the Baptist church over fifty years altogether.
