Former Montana first lady, Mary S Ford died Monday afternoon at her home after a brief illness. She was 96.

Mrs Ford was the wife of former Governor Sam Ford, who served as Montana's governor from 1941 to 1949. She was also the granddaughter of territorial Gov. Preston Leslie.

She was born 11 Aug 1885 in Wellington, KS to Waller Shobe and Isabel Leslie Shobe. She and Sam C Ford were married 24 Nov 1910 in Helena. He died in 1961.

Mrs Ford came to Helena with her family in 1887, when her grandfather was appointed territorial governor. She lived in Great Falls for a few years while her husband practiced law. They returned to Helena when Mr Ford was elected to the Supreme Court in 1928. She worked for the Red Cross during WWII.

Mrs Ford was a member of the Chapter AA of the PEO Sisterhood, the DAR and Fortnightly. She was also a member of the restoration committee of the original governor's mansion. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Helena.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs Charles (Dorothy) James, in 1973. Surviving are her children: Mrs Jack (Isabel) Creighton of Helena, Mrs Melbourne (Betty) Jackson of Moscow, ID; and Mrs Clinton (Peggy) Rockwell of Berthoud, CO; 10 grandchildren, including a granddaughter, Judy Rigler of Helena; and 13 great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Jim Barfknecht, John Delano, Dan Dykstra, Joe Golden, Wm Stinchfield and Eric White.
