John was born in Milford Twp.,Bucks Co., Pennsylvania to Johanne Peter Hachenberg and Anna Elizabeth (Siphers) Hachenberg, the fifth child of seven children. John's father, Johanne Peter, was an Ensign in Col. Baxter's Flying Camp Regiment in the Revolutionary War and was captured at the Battle of Trenton and held prisoner at Long Island.

From "A History of the Goshenhoppen Reformed Charge, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania (1727-1819)" by Rev. William John Hinke, Ph.D., D.D., Pub. 1920, we find that John was baptised by Rev. J.T. Faber at the Great Swamp Reformed Church in 1774, Lehigh Co., Pennsylvania. Baptism sponsors were listed as Valentine Huper & wife. A digital copy of this book can be found online.

John married Matilda (Maiden Name Unknown) about 1794. Some family trees state that Matilda's maiden name was Shaffer, however, no documentation has been found of proof of her maiden name. John's eldest brother, Johanne Peter Hackenberg Jr. married Hannah Shaffer, and some family trees have confused Matilda with Hannah. It is possible that perhaps Matilda and Hannah were sisters, but further research is needed to verify.

John is listed as a carpenter in 1799 in Penns Twp., Snyder Co., Pennsylvania. In 1817 John is listed as a laborer in Centre Twp., Union Co., Pennsylvania. In the 1850 U.S. Census John and Matilda are still living in Centre Twp., and John is listed as a farmer.

John and Matilda were parents of 9 children, Polly Maria, Lewis, Lydia, Catherine, Susannah, John, Peter, Francis, and Samuel.

John died in Synder County, Pennsylvania, on Feb. 16, 1856. His record of death is recorded in the Snyder County Orphans' Court Docket 1855-1861, Vol. 1, Book 1, Page 22, 60 & 68; May Term AD 1856. This record pertains to his probate administration and can be found at familysearch.org.
