Capt Alexander Miller, 81, a leader in the fire department half a century ago, died at his home, 731 Franklin-st. SE, Wednesday after a long illness.
Entering the fire service in 1881, Capt. Miller served until his retirement in 1915, serving the 34 years in No. 6 engine house.
Staring as a relief fireman, Miller gained a full-time position in 1881 and in 1890 was promoted to lieutenant and in 1902 was raised to captain and from then until his retirement commanded the engine house.
He leaves a daughter, Mts John M Halloran: two sons, John and Alexander J Miller; two brothers, John od Stanton and Charles of Grand Rapids, and six sisters, Mrs Agnes Rumpr, Mrs Hannah Dorsey, Mrs Lewis Freeman, Mrs Nellie O'Connor, Mrs Katherine Ritzenheimer and Mrs Marie Egger.
The body is at the Colonial Funeral home.
