Champion Race Horse. Sunny's Halo (Halo - Mostly Sunny) was born in Canada in 1980 and bred and owned by D.J. 'Pud Foster, and trained by David Cross Jr. Sunny's Halo was the 2nd Canadian-born thoroughbred to win the Kentucky Derby, which he did in 1983 with jockey Eddie Delahoussaye. The 1st to do so was Northern Dancer in 1964 and Sunny's Halo was the first Canadian-bred horse to win over US$1 million during his 3-year-old season. All together he won 9 career victories, 8 of them in stakes races, with 4 coming in Group One Events, and he was 3 times second and twice third in just 20 career starts. Among his other honors, was being named Canada's Sovereign Award Winning Champion Two Year-Colt. He made his three-year debut in winning the Oaklawn Park Rebel Handicap and the Group One Arkansas Derby, as well as many other honors and wins. Sunny's Halo was retired as a stud in 1983 for 7.5 million US, with earnings of $1,247,791, making him Canada's all-time leading money winning Thoroughbred. He was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 1986. He became Texas' leading sire; on June 3, 2003, he was euthanized at age 23, and buried where he last stood at stud in Bullard, Texas. However, in July 2006, his remains were exhumed and returned to Louisville, Kentucky, to be re-interred at the Kentucky Derby Museum at Churchill Downs.
