Martha was the oldest of 6 children, five of whom lived past early childhood. At age 4, she appeared with her parents Alexander and Miranda Isabel (Menefee) Chambers and sisters Euretta and Margaret on the 1880 Census in the household of her widowed grandmother Mary Ann (Manson) Menefee in Bosque County, Texas (ED 9; Pg 373-C). Her late grandfather's mother, Elizabeth (Manlove) Menefee, was also living in Bosque County at the time, in the household of her daughter and son-in-law, Martha's great-aunt and -uncle, Sarah E and Henry Fossett. The Chambers family remained in the vicinity, and Martha married Benjamin Franklin Cook, a native of Henderson County, Texas, at the age of 17 on 25 Sep 1893 in neighboring Erath County.

Martha and Benjamin settled in Erath County, near Martha's parents, and appeared with their first three children on the 1900 Census (ED 64; Pg 37-B) just outside of Stephenville, where Alexander Chambers died in 1907. After her father's death, her mother moved away, but Martha and Benjamin remained in Erath County at least through the 1910 Census (ED 26: Pg 13-B). By the 1920 Census, though, they had moved their family closer to Benjamin's family roots, appearing in Trinidad, Henderson County, Texas (ED 27; Pg 1-B). They remained in Henderson County on the 1930 Census (ED 27; Pg 1-B), and Martha died there due to myocardial degeneration at age 64 in 1940, just 4 years after her mother's death.
