Hattie was born in 1888 in Colorado, while her father Lyman and maybe even her brothers were mining for gold in the Boulder area. Her background came mostly from Vermont, originally. Her parents seem to have split in the 1890s, so she may not have known her father Lyman Stoddard very well -- as he shows up in Arizona in censuses around this time. Hattie does appear to be close to her mother, Rhoda. Hattie married Asa Bixby Bowen in 1906 -- he was 20 years older than she was. In the early 1930s, Hattie left the family's Nebraska home with her baby girl Betty, and lived with a man named Carl Larson in the Pennsylvania and New York areas around Lake Erie. Hattie's descendants say she never actually married Carl Larson, so maybe it was a common-law situation, but there are records listing her as Hattie Larson.
