Born in either Zaluczne or Odrowaz, Poland, the son of John Kanty Kocanda and Anna Majchrowicz. His date of birth has several variations: Aug 15, 1894(WW I registration); Jun 25, 1894(Declaration of Intentions-Cook County, IL.); Jul 25, 1894(WW II registration); Jul 25, 1897(Social Security application). When he returned from WW I on Jun 28, 1920, records indicate that he was 26 yrs. and 9 mos. old. However, when he was married in 1926, he indicated that he was 27 yrs. old. On his headstone, birth year is 1897.

He fought in WW I with Haller's Army, arriving back in the United States aboard the troop transport ship, Mercury.
On Jan 23, 1926 he married Anna Sieczka, (the daughter of Bartholomew Sieczka and Marianna Gal) at St. Adalbert Church in Chicago, IL. He worked as a furniture finisher, and died in Little Company of Mary hospital after being struck by an auto driven by Gerald W. Baker, 24, of 6045 S. Moody av. Baker, a laborer, told sheriff's police he was driving west in 79th street near Meade avenue when Kocanda ran into the street in the path of the car, per a report in the Chicago Tribune newspaper. He was buried May 3, 1960 and his wife, Anna, was buried alongside him in 1984. He was predeceased by two sons, Walter and Chester.
