Benjamin Gardner was the son of Stephen Jr and Frances (Brown) Gardner, born 1768 in New London, Connecticut. His parents were at Wintermute Fort, on 3 July 1778, during the Battle of Wyoming Valley and some evidence suggests that Benjamin was with them, but they returned to Connecticut soon after. He lived most of his life in Waterford, New London, Connecticut and made his living as a sailor. There's a tale of his exploits on a whaling vessel which wrecked and how his bravery saved those who were on board. His first wife, Phebe Harris, he married 15 Mar 1795 at New London. They had four children all born in Waterford. Sometime after her death, he married Elizabeth Beebe, the widow of Ezekeil Tinker. After her death, Benjamin and his daughter Maria moved to Greenfield Township, Luzerne (now Lackawanna County), Pennsylvania. There he married his third wife, Christianna Simrell Gardner, in 1747; his brother Jesse's widow. Died 29 Nov 1854 in Greenfield.
