Amos Baker resided with his parents in Braintrim Township, Wyoming County (at the time of residence it was Luzerne County as Wyoming County was not yet formed), Pennsylvania before their removal to Reading in Schuyler County (then Steuben County as Schuyler County had not yet been formed), New York.

Amos enlisted during the War of 1812 from Reading, New York on 9 September 1813 in Captain James Read's Company of New York militia. He was discharged 9 December 1813 at Fort Niagara, New York. He married 3 July 1814 at nearby Hector in Schuyler County, New York, Ruth Warner. They removed with his parents and other family members to what became Brookfield Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.

The first church (Methodist Episcopal) was organized about the year 1818 in what is now Brookfield Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. The first members were Ira Baker, Amos Baker, Samuel Baker, John Joseph, William Joseph, Azel Nobles, and their wives, and Hannah Joseph, Deborah Joseph, and Curtis Cady. The first place of meeting was John Joseph's log dwelling house.

Amos Baker first appears on the 1835 assessment list (compiled fall of 1834) of Wells Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, locating on a farm adjacent to his, sister Abigail Lawrence and family, who had located in Wells a few years earlier. They farmed there for several years and then removed to Webb Mills in the town of Southport, Chemung County, New York. Amos drew a pension for his service during the War of 1812 and his wife, Ruth later drew a widow's pension.

While a resident of Wells Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania there is a letter in his pension file from his brother-in-law, Isaac H. Metcalf of Brookfield Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, relating their service in the War of 1812 and referencing Abigail Lawrence of Wells Township, the sister of Amos Baker.
