Mae Eva Little may have been born on 20 Feb 1884 in Bay City, Bay, MI, according to a Michigan Births 1867 - 1902 record indicating her father William Little, born in Canada. After William Little died in Mississippi about 1890 her mother remarried John P. Hinds in 1895. According to the June 1900 U.S. Census of Belding City Ward 1-3, Mae Eva Little lived in a boarding house and worked in a Belding silk mill as a winder.
Michigan and Ohio Marriage and Divorce records indicate that she married three times, first to Albert J. McPhee in Smyrna, Ionia, MI, on 19 Dec 1900 (divorced 9 Jan 1904), then to Fred Edwin Wise of Holland, MI, in Montgomery, OH, on 4 Nov 1908 (divorced 7 Feb 1911), and finally to Leonard Jerome Joel b. 5 Apr. 1891 in Hoboken, NJ, in Detroit, Wayne, MI, on 9 Apr 1913. No children ensued from these marriages, and she is interred as Mae Little Joel.
The various records that have been examined contain many factual inconsistencies but include at least one telling reference that confirms these marriages. A 1918 Rochester NY city directory lists Mae and Leonard residing at 181 Barrington Street. Note that while the obituary/death notice states that Mae Eva would be interred in Ohio, the St. Joseph Cemetery burial record lists her burial there.
A subsequent NY marriage record of Leonard J. Joel dated Sep 1919 indicates that his first wife had died. Albert J. McPhee remarried on 29 Nov 1985 in Ionia, Ionia, MI, and he and his spouse, Frances Cameron, are interred in Otisco Cemetery, Belding, MI (Find A Grave Memorials 6067515 and 6067532). Fred Edwin Wise remarried on 14 Feb 1912, and he and his spouse, Jeanette G. Harkema, are interred in Pilgrim Home Cemetery, Holland, Ottawa, MI (Find A Grave Memorials 49806467 and 49806468).
