Graveside services for Amanda Barbara "Bobbie" Anderson, 90, will be held today (Thursday), Sept. 1, 2011 at Lexington Cemetery. Services will be under the direction of Wilson-Little Funeral Home.
Mrs. Anderson passed away Monday, August 29, 2011 at Sunset Estates Nursing Home in Purcell.
She was born in Lexington on November 30, 1920 to C.E. Horttor and Mable E. (Eschwig) Horttor. She graduated from Lexington High School in 1938 and later married Jay G. Anderson in 1939.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Pete Horttor, and her husband, Jay G. Anderson on Jan. 15, 2006.
She is survived by her son, David Anderson and wife Martha of Lexington; three grandchildren, Kim Croslin and husband, Jeff, Chad Anderson and wife, Carol, and Jim Gilstrap;
six great-grandchildren, Kassidy, Blake and Kinley Croslin, Kylie and Siena Anderson and Alan Gilstrap; and her only sister, Doris Sparlin.
Barbara, known to all her friends as "Bobbie," lived all of her 90 years in the Lexington area. She and husband Jay started their life farming a 160 acre farm three miles N. of Lexington on Highway 77. Their only son, David, was born on this farm. Together they farmed until 1950 when they moved to Norman.
During their years in Norman, Bobbie worked at several different jobs including, Safeway, OU, Dorsett Electronics and Norman Public Schools. In the early 1960s she started working at Tinker Air Force Base and stayed until her retirement in the early part of 1982.
In the early 1960s they moved north of Lexington to a 40-acre farm on Bryant Road in the township of Slaughterville. This became their home for the rest of their lives. Bobbie belonged to the Lexington Senior Citizens where she spent many hours with old friends and her sister, Doris. On June of 2010, Bobbie moved to the Westbrook Gardens Assisted Living Center in Purcell and lived there until her health began to fail. At that time she moved to Sunset Estates.
Bobbie will be remembered by those who knew her as a hard working person. Her work ethic came from her ancestors, the Horttors with influence of the Anderson family history. She often remarked how much she learned from her mother-in-law, Mrs. W. E. Anderson. Bobbie and Jay were fresh out of high school when WWII started. Short on things to buy because of the war, Bobbie and Mrs. W.E. spent many hours together on the Anderson farm making clothes, planting a garden, canning and harvesting crops. It was a time of making do with what you could raise and eat. Her mother-in-law knew all of the old ways of, living off the land from her younger days of being one of the early settlers of this great state of Oklahoma. Being a city girl married to a country boy, she had to learn fast how to make a life on the farm. Bobbie said these were some of the best years of her life.
