Elizabeth Smith married John "Long John" Jennings, her first cousin, on April 9,1800. She was the daughter of Mary Jennings and her second husband, Isaac Smith. Mary's ancestors were among the earliest Orangeburg area settlers and were prominent planters. Her grandfather and an Uncle Paul fought together in the Revolution. As a bride, she brought with her to John's plantation, fine linens, silver, furniture, her favorite horse, and household servants. The plantation home took on a cordial warmth and relaxed comfort that was in her breeding and so pleasing to John.
Elizabeth died in 1804 leaving John with two small children, a three year old son and a one year old daughter. It was two and one half years before John married again.
