Viola Ruth Chesnut, 89, Warfordsburg, died Saturday, October 14, 2006, at Chambersburg Hospital.
Born November 13, 1916, in the family home in rural Thompson Township, Fulton County, she was the daughter of the late Elmer B. and Nellie Bottenfield Covalt.
She was preceded in death by her husband, D. Raymond Chesnut, in 1980.
She was a 1934 graduate of Hancock High School.
She retired in 1982 after serving as clerk and postmaster of Warfordsburg Post Office for 20 years. After retirement, she was an active volunteer in the community, helping with Bible Release at Warfordsburg and Needmore for many years. She participated in the Relay For Life event as long as she was able. She was known as the "Cookie Lady" because of the hundreds of dozens of cookies she baked for community events and fundraisers.
She was able to remain in her own home through the assistance of her daughter-in-law, Lisa, grandson Joshua and caregiver Barbara Sipes of Home Instead Inc.
She was an active member of Warfordsburg Presbyterian Church where she served in many capacities over the years, including choir, elder, Sunday School and the women's group. She was also active in Warfordsburg Senior Center.
She is survived by a daughter, Sylvia Shives, and husband Robert, Hagerstown; two sons: David R. Chesnut Jr. and wife Huldah, Pataskala, Ohio; Jeffrey M. Chesnut and wife Lisa of Warfordsburg; a son-in-law, Harry Lee Garland, Needmore; two sisters: Jessie Dumire, Sellersville, Pa., and Billie Jeanne Sellers, Greencastle; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two daughters: Mary Anne Garland and Karen L. Chesnut; a great-grandson; a sister, Mary Simpson; four brothers: Lynn Covalt, John Covalt, Merrill Covalt, Mark Covalt, and her two dearest friends, Fairy Kirk and Evie Hendershot.
Services were held Wednesday, October 18, at 11:00 a.m., at Warfordsburg Presbyterian Church. Rev. John Barlow officiated. Burial was made in the church cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Warfordsburg Presbyterian Church Organ Fund, c/o Dianne Kincaid, 6251 Thompson Road, Needmore, PA 17238.
Arrangements were under the direction of Grove Funeral Home, Hancock.
