While living with her parents in Aal Hallingdal, Norway, Turi was a member of a group of girls who cared for the stock in the mountains during the summer season. On May 4, 1877 Turi emigrated from Oslo with her sister, Randi, on the steamboat HERO to the United States. She secured employment in a home near New Sweden in Nicollet County, Minnesota . While there, her romance with Knute started. They were married in 1881 and moved to Stony Run Township near Clarkfield, Minnesota. During the fall and winter months Knute taught in a rural school. In 1888, they moved to Wittenburg, Wisconsin where Knute opened a "Norwegian -English Normal School". In 1890, the family moved to St. Ansgar, Iowa. Here Knute was principal of St. Ansgar Seminary. In 1893, they moved to Madison, MN where Knute served as teacher and principal of Madison Lutheran Normal School for 27 years.
Turi was a small, energetic, active and happy person, proud of her big family of seven children, always looking out for their welfare. Her only social activity was "Ladies Aid" which she was forced to give up when her health began failing. She loved to cook, clean house and sew. She never seemed tired or irritable, always being even tempered and happy. Even when she was an invalid, she remained cheerful.
While living in Madison and after the accidental death of their son Carl in 1909, Turi's health began to fail. On her doctor's advice for change and relaxation, she took a trip to visit her parents, brothers and sisters in Hatton, North Dakota.
Turi died in 1922, having been an invalid in a wheelchair due to a stroke called "Creeping Paralysis". She had been confined to the wheelchair much of the time since 1909. She was buried in the cemetery in Madison, Minnesota.
