On March 20, 1848, Nancy (Clack) Hudspeth, wife of Joel Hudspeth died in Franklin, Kentucky. As was the custom at that time, she was buried in a vault in the front yard. Inscribed on her vault is the following:
SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF NANCY CLACK
Daughter of Sterling and Mary Wood Clack
Consort of Joel Hudspeth
Born November 5, 1782
Departed this life March 20, 1848
Like the rich garden flower
Waved in perfume
We bloom with the morning
But wither at noon.
There is a two-story red brick house where the original home of Joel Hudspeth stood. The people who bought the land objected to having the vault in their front yard, so when the new cemetery was made in Franklin, Kentucky, the Hudspeth's were offered a choice lot if they would move the vault. This they did.
