OBITUARIES

Mrs. Hannah M. Nelson (Bodin)
1890-1920 Vilas, Kansas

Mrs. Hannah M. Nelson, whose maiden name was Hannah M. Bodin, was born on the farm 2 miles northwest of Vilas Jan. 27, 1890. On the 13th of April the same year she was received into communion with Christ and His Church through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism.

She grew up as a kind and obedient child under the tender care of Christian parents bringing them in return a great amount of joy and comfort. Her congenial and sunny disposition on through life was bent towards making others happy. At the age of 14 she was confirmed in the Christian faith in the Swedish Lutheran Church of Vilas and thereby assumed the full privileges and duties of fellowship with Christ. The benefits which the Lord thus offers were eagerly cherished and the obligations sincerely and faithfully performed. She was a very serious member of the Vilas Lutheran Church where she found ample opportunity to serve her Master.

For a number of years she served as organist and teacher in the Sunday School and was a leading member of the choir. Her musical talent was above the ordinary.

On the 15th of February 1912 she was united in Holy Wedlock to Mr. Frank E. Nelson. She was a tender and faithful wife and mother. This union was blessed with three children. One son, Walfred, remains to feel the loss of a good mother’s loving care.

For some time her health had been failing. She bore the physical ailments with patience, always finding joy and comfort in the rich promises of God’s Word. She departed from this world of infirmity, pain and sorrow, calmly and peacefully Sunday afternoon May 2, at the age of 30 years, 3 months, and 5 days. No longer may we see that countenance that radiated so much sunshine, nor hear that rich full voice sing the old familiar melodies. She has left a great vacancy in the home, in the church and in the community. But the beautiful memory of her consecrated life will ever be retained as an inspiration and a source of comfort.

She is survived by her husband, Mr. Frank E. Nelson; one son Walfred; her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Fredrick Bodin of Vilas; two sisters, Mrs. Freda Riley and family of Humboldt; and Mrs. Emma Hanson and family of Petrolia; two brothers John E. Bodin of Vilas, and William Bodin and family of Topeka together with their relatives.

The funeral services were held from the Vilas Lutheran Church Tuesday afternoon, May 4th, Rev. Fred W. Hanson spoke in both Swedish and English. The following scripture passages were used: Phil. 1:23 and Matt. 25:21. Beautiful selections were rendered by the Vilas choir assisted by other friends. Two of her favorite hymns were read as part of the services. Her six brother-in-laws served as pall-bearers. The large attendance and the many beautiful floral tributes bore testimony of the many friends who mourned her early departure. The funeral was one of the largest ever held at Vilas. Interment was in the little cemetery east of Vilas.

At the grave the choir sang:
There is a land that is fairer than day
And by faith we can see it afar;
For the Father waits over the way
To prepare us a dwelling place there.
In the sweet by-and-by,
We shall meet on that beautiful shore.

The members of the family desire in this connection to express their appreciation and thanks for the kindness and sympathy shown by relatives and friends, for the many beautiful floral offerings and the comforting songs rendered by the Vilas choir and their friends.
