She was born July 31, 1906 in New Knoxville, Ohio, a daughter of the late Henry and Anne Luft Deerhake. She attended elementary school In Auglaize County, Ohio, high school in St. Mary's, Ohio and graduated from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio, majoring in elementary education.
She was married to the Rev. Clarence L Schmidt on August 14, 1931, In New Knoxville, Ohio. The couple celebrated their Diamond Jubilee Anniversary (60th) In 1991. She taught for many years at Watertown and St. Mary's, Ohio.
She served with her husband in First Church, Ridgway, Penn., from 1931 to 1937, Immanuel U.C.C. from 1937 to 1950. She served as a house mother In Jubilee Dorm at Lakeland College, from 1950 to 1955, and as professors wife in many ways till 1972, living on campus.
She was a member of Immanuel Women's Guild from 1937, serving as primary church school superintendent for many years and Junior choir director at Immanuel for 13 years. For many years, she was a member of the Lakeland College Campus Guild. She was also a member of the Lakeland College Women's Auxiliary, serving as a secretary for several years and was presently a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ, Town of Herman.
Upon her husband's retirement from Lakeland, they moved to Cleveland, Wis., at which time her husband accepted a call to an assistant pastorship at St. John's U.C.C. Church, Sheboygan, serving there for 12 years. She became fully involved in the life activities and organizations of that church. Upon their second retirement In May of 1934, she and her husband were engaged in visitation at Immanuel U.C.C, until a new pastor could be found in the fall in 1986.
Survivors Include her husband, the Rev. Clarence Schmidt of Sheboygan; one son, Lewis Alan (Gerry) Schmidt, of rural Elkhart Lake; one daughter, Judith Ann (Phillip) Walkenhorst. of Elkhart Lake; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Sylvia Schmidt, of Sheboygan Falls; three sisters, Mildred Jauert, of New Knoxville, Ohio; Clara Layton, of Sidney, Ohio and Edna Parmalee, of Meriden, Conn, and one brother, Vernon Deerhake, of Findlay, Ohio.
She was preceded In death by two sons, Lawrence and Philip, one sister and three brothers.
Friends may call at the Zimmer Funeral Home, In Howards Grove, from 4 to 9 p.m., Sunday, and at Immanuel U.C.C., Town of Herman, from 1 1 a.m., Monday, until the time of services at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. Wayne Druek, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated for Lakeland College Music, Pre-Theology Departments, United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities, or Immanuel United Church of Christ.
