James Morton brought his family to Marion County, Illinois in the early to mid 1840s. They lived in the Romine Church neighborhood in Raccoon Township. James and his wife are buried at the Old Covenanter Church near Walnut Hill, Marion County, Illinois. His parents were Alexander Morton and Martha Phoebe (Blair) Morton. Martha is also buried in Old Covenanter, but the Morton clan had not made it to Illinois before father Alexander died. According to my GGG grandmother Tirzah Elvira (Morton) McLaughlin, her grandpa Alexander was buried somewhere on the Morton property in Lincoln County, Tennessee.

Gravesite Details
His stone said he died in 1870, but this must have been a mistake. All family bible records have him dying in Jan 1871, and the 1870 census (which was taken in June 1870) has him alive as a head of household.
