Mary is the daughter of John Parkinson and Elizabeth Clark, who are also buried in Old Covenanter. Mary was born in Chester, South Carolina and as a little girl moved with her family to Lincoln County, Tennessee.

She was the second wife of James Morton. She and her husband moved to Illinois from Tennessee around shortly before 1842, as proven by the birth years of their children. Daughter Katherine P. Morton is born in Illinois in Apr 1842, but the Mortons are in the Lincoln, Tenn. census in 1840.
