Major General Ross Ayers was one of seven children born to G. M. and Linda Ayers.

Began his military career in 1931 by enlisting in Service Battery, 131st Field Artillery Battalion, 36th Infantry Division of the Texas National Guard. Commissioned a 2d Lieutenant, Artillery in 1939. Mobilized with the 36th Division in 1943, served in the Europe Theater. Awards: Silver Star (for landing the first Artillery Piece on the beach head at Salerno, Italy). Also fought at Monte Casino and in the Vosges Mountains in France.

Preceded in death by his first wife in 1950, Marion Ruth Betts, who he married in 1950; and by his second wife, Flora Mayfield Betts (7/30/1919-9/4/1988) who he married in 1958. Flora is also buried at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

CITATION: (UNCONFIRMED - Citation Needed): Ross Ayers, United States Army, is reported to have been awarded the Silver Star under the below-listed General Orders for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the 36th Infantry Division during World War II.
