Charles is the child of Polly Hough and George Keefer.

Charles Benjamin Keefer and his wife were married in Sharon, Mercer, Penn in 1841. Their first five children were born in Sharon. In 1850 CB purchased 160 acres of land on 84th street, West of Caledonia, in Kent County from John and Nancy Williams on 7 Oct 1850.

In 1852 CB, his wife and their 5 children loaded as many of their personal possessions they could pack behind a team of oxen, with two hefers in tow and set out for what was to become their new home. They had another 4 children in Gaines.

A settlement of Indians of 300 or more were only a short distance away. They taught the Keefer's how to make maple syrup. CB would walk to Grand Rapids to sell or exchange for other goods.

Their Children: Joel Curtis (Johanna Shea), Virginia, Charles (Alice Stedman; Emma Hickox), Alice, William, Michael, Frederick, Josephine (Shea) and Emma Clara Norton (McColl).

Joel, the oldest took over the farm in 1863. He built a new home, unfortunately it burned down along with many of the family antiques and precious belongings.

Another barn was built in 1909. In 1929, after Joel died, his son Frederick took possession of the land. Frederick sold some of the tall oak trees during the war for use in building ships.

Frederick passed away and the land, over 150 years of being in the family, was sold by his wife to a developer. The developer sold the land in parcels. The barn still stands today.

Charles had four other siblings: Nancy (Williams), Samuel, Matilda (Truesdale) and Sarah.

Several of the children were buried on the Keefer farm.
