MRS. ZENTNER, FORMER MAYOR, DIES DEC. 3
Mrs. Ella Bittner Zentner, former mayor of Bellevue, died at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at the Josephine Baird home in New York City. Mrs. Zentner, who was 83, had been confined to the home for almost a year prior to her death.
The Requiem High Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 9 in St. Joseph Catholic church, Bellevue, by Rt. Rev. Msgr. J. E. Linkenmeyer. Burial will be in the Presbyterian cemetery.
Friends may call at the Dye funeral home after 3 p.m. today. The Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home.
Ella Bittner Zentner was born June 25, 1883 at Bellevue. She was the daughter of Louis and Mary Niemeyer Bittner. She married George Zentner Jan. 9, 1902.
Mrs. Zentner was a member of St. Joseph Catholic church and of its Rosary society. In 1949, she was awarded the "Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice" award. She was a past president of the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women and in 1950 made a pilgrimage to Rome.
She served as president of the Bellevue Red Cross chapter and of the Jackson County Public Health association. A member of the American Legion auxiliary, she was a past member of the state board of that organization. She had also served as chairman of the county Democratic women. Mrs. Zentner was also a member of the Bellevue Golf club.
In 1953, she was elected mayor of Bellevue serving in that capacity for four years. She was appointed police court judge in Feb. 1961, holding that position for two years.
Mrs. Zentner lived in Bellevue until poor health necessitated her moving to New York where she could be near her daughter.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Perry (Florence) Walsh of new York City; one grandson, Bud Walsh of New York; one granddaughter, Mrs. Harmon (Betty) Sisk, also of New York.; four great grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Lloyd (Roma) Wertz of Dubuque.
She was preceded in death by her husband; four brothers; one sister; and her parents.
