Obituary taken from "The Edna Independent", February 13, 1892:

Death of Mrs. W. E. Staige.

DIED - At her home three miles southwest of Edna, on Monday, February 8, 1892, at 2:45 o'clock p.m., Mrs. Jennie (Rhodes) Staige, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Rhodes, and wife of Mr. W. E. Staige, age 22 years, 9 month sand 26 days.

The above announcement brings the sad intelligence of the death of one of Edna's estimable young women, and takes from our midst a dutiful daughter, a loving wife, and pleasant companion. Mrs. Staige has been among us from childhood and her conduct has won for her a life long esteem from every one who knew her; and her decease makes a vacancy that will ever remain, at home, and in our social circles. During the four long weeks of her suffering, she manifested that quiet contentment and sweet face that only christians can display.

Early in childhood she gave her heart to God, being christened in the German Reform church at Paris, Ohio, and her daily walk since has proven that she merited the reward she has just received, and that today, she is happy in her heavenly home, basking in the sunshine and protecting care.

That she was a dutiful and loving wife was shown by the happiness she evinced while enjoying her husband's company; always greeting him with smiles and pleasantries. Even when the cold clammy dew of death was gathering on her brown, and her voice had long been silent, she recognized her husband with kisses. Although her last hour was almost unbearable suffering, when the last moment came a peaceful calm spread over her face, breaking into a smile signifying a rest, sweet and beautiful; free from sorrow, free from pain. At rest, sleeping; sleeping sweetly a dreamless sleep.

And though in future years I happily see,
Her childhood home, yet never more for me,
Will smile that vanquished earthly face,
Silent she sleeps beside that eastern sea.
While mummering winds breathe soft their threndoy;
She rests secure, from life's entangling maze.
~~
Mrs. Staige had great confidence in her attending physician, Dr. Clark, and before her death expressed the belief that he was doing all in his power for her.
~~
The funeral obsequies were held at the M. E. church on Wednesday at 12 o'lcock and were attended by a large concourse of sympathizing friends. Rev. H. V. Spear conducted the services at the church, and preached a fitting sermon, after which the funeral cortege proceeded to the Edna cemetery, "that silent city of the dead," where the remains were laid to rest.
~~
Mrs. Sarah Creighton and Mrs. F. Luckenbill, of Burlington, Iowa, sisters of the bereaved husband, were in attendance at the funeral.
