Lt. 1st Squadron, 5th Divison, New York Volunteers in the War of 1812.

ABEL COLE (Benjamin, Ebenezer, Benjamin, Hugh, James), b. Shaftsbury, Vt., Oct. 27, 1779; d. Selby Co., Ind. Feb. 27, 1860; m. Oct. 6, 1803, Rebecca Burnham, b. Feb. 5, 1782, in Shaftsbury, Vt.,; d. in Shelby Co., Ind., July 12, 1862, daughter Major Asa and Lucy (Huntington) Burnham. He was chosen Treasurer of the Schools of Shaftsbury in 1804. He removed to Exeter, Otsego Co., N. Y., in 1804. Thence to Jefferson Co., New York in 1806. April 27, 1807, he was commissioned 2d Lieutenant of a troop of First Squadron Fifth Division of New York State Cavalry by Governor Morgan Lewis. His original commission is in the possession of his grandchildren. He held this position during the War of 1812. He commanded his company at the battle of Sacketts Harbor. He represented Jefferson County in the New York Legislature in 1816 and '17. I hold the original commision, of which the following is a copy:
"The people of the State of New York by the grace of God free and Independent. To all whom these presents may come, greeting: Know ye, that we, reposing especial trust and confidence in the ability and integrity in Abel Cole, of our county of Jefferson, Esquire, Have nominated, constituted, and appointed, and by these presents do nominate, constitute and appoint him the said Abel Cole first Judge of the Court of Common Pleas for our said county of Jefferson. Hereby giving and granting unto him all and singular the powers and authority of said office by law belonging and appertaining. To have and to hold the said office of first Judge of said county, together with the fees, profits and advantages to the same belonging for and during such time as he may behave himself therein, or until he shall have arrived at the age of sixty years. In testimony whereof we have caused these our letters to be made patent, and the great seal of our State to be hereunto affixed. Witness our trusty and well beloved DeWitt Clinton Esquire, Governor of our said State and Commander-in-Chief of the Militia and Admiral of the Navy of the same, and by and with the advice and consent of our said Council of Appointment at our city of Albany in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and eighteen, and in the forty-second year of our Independence. "Signed DeWitt Clinton." Judge Cole resigned his office Sept. 20, 1820, and removed to Hanover Township, Shelby County, Ind. The post office of Hanover was established in 1822. He was appointed Postmaster, which position he held until 1834, when the name and location of the office was changed to Morristown, Ind., July 5, 1822. The special commission appointed by the Legislature to locate the county seat at Shelby County met, and the Hon. Abel Cole was appointed to survey and lay out the property donated for said county seat and offer the lots for sale at public sale to the highest bidder. He was buried in the Hanover Church Cemetery.
