Alfred Coates, a highly respected colored man, died of heart trouble and dropsy at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mattie Fisher, of Currytown, this county, at half-past two o'clock Tuesday evening, April 25, aged 63 years, 3 months and 26 days. He had been a great sufferer for the past three years, and had been a member of the colored M. E. church at that place for forty years.
The deceased was born in New London during slavery, and was owned by Wm. Higgins. Later he, with his mother, a sister and brother were sold to Mr. Wm. Hobbs, of near Libertytown, in whose possession he was when emancipated. Since then he has been the trusted employe of different farmers in that community. The funeral took place on Thursday. Service was held at John Wesley chapel, Libertytown and interment in adjoining graveyard. Rev. Bosley Boyce officiated.
