John worked at various neighboring farms for room and board and attended school during the winter months. He saved his money, rented a farm, and helped his parents and other siblings come to the area in the 1890's. John was a reserved, quiet, and hard-working young chap who was a capable bachelor-cook and farmer.
On a trip back home to Fennimore, he stopped at a hotel in Argyle, WI and met the daughter of the proprietor, Ona Eaton. John began corresponding with Ona and romance soon blossomed. They married in Argle, WI February 6, 1900. They settled and farmed in the Inwood area.
