On March 9, 1777, Adam Coppernoll enlisted in Captain Graham's company, the 1st New York Regiment, under the command of General Van Schaeck. He was taken prisoner at Sabbath Day Point on March 20, 1777, and was returned under parole in February, 1778. On September 1, 1780, He became a Corporal in "Finks" and was drafted into Bleecker's in January, 1781. Seriously wounded by an exploding shell at Yorktown in October, 1781, he was carried from the battlefield by a fellow soldier, John Pardee. Crippled by his injuries, Adam Coppernoll was discharged by General George Washington on November 3,1782. Coppernoll and Pardee lived near one another after the war, maintaining a lifelong friendship.
